Four miles from the University of Florida in Alachua County, is the community of Savanna Pointe, named for the expansive prairie described in the 1790's by naturalist William Bartram as the "great Alachua Savanna." Today, part of that savanna is preserved within Savanna Pointe’s planned residential development, the balance comprising the adjacent Paynes Prairie State Preserve.

Savanna Pointe is located less than a mile southwest of S.W. 34th Street on Williston Road (State Road 121), just past the Interstate 75 interchange at Exit 382, and immediately west of the Gainesville Golf and Country Club.
